October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and this year’s campaign theme is “See Yourself in Cyber”. The annual Awareness Month is meant to help individuals protect themselves online as threats become more commonplace. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and the National Cybersecurity Alliance (NCA) lead a collaborative effort between government and industry to raise awareness nationally and internationally.
“See Yourself in Cyber” demonstrates that cybersecurity may seem like a complex subject but is ultimately all about people. This year, the focus is on the “people” part of cybersecurity and providing information and resources to help educate CISA partners and the public. The effort is to ensure all individuals and organizations can make smart decisions.
Four key action steps to take throughout October, and the rest of the year, include: enabling multi-factor authentication, using strong passwords, recognizing and reporting phishing attempts, and keeping software up to date. No matter what role you play – individual, consumer, vendor, etc. – it is important to take the basic steps to protect your online information and privacy.
