As a result of the pandemic, we have all come to know, love, and hate Zoom. Whether it be a team meeting while working remotely, a family gathering over the holidays, or virtual happy hours with friends, many of us are experiencing fatigue of staring at our friends, coworkers, and family in square boxes on our screens.
Several virtual-meeting start-ups have begun to emerge with the goal of promoting more creativity and a stronger connection through an immersive experience that encourages us to stay active instead of waiting to click the ‘leave meeting’ button. Some include Gather.town, Kumospace, and Pluto; some incorporating spacial dynamics where users can move around a virtual map to interact, and others focused on corporate and academic conferences. Since we do not see virtual gatherings disappearing any time soon, now might be the time to explore options other than Zoom, especially depending on the scenario and mood you are trying to create among a group.
