As a result of the pandemic, we have all come to know, love, and hate Zoom. Whether it be a team meeting while working remotely, a family gathering over the holidays, or virtual happy hours with friends, many of us are experiencing fatigue of staring at our friends, coworkers, and family in square boxes on our screens.
Several virtual-meeting start-ups have begun to emerge with the goal of promoting more creativity and a stronger connection through an immersive experience that encourages us to stay active instead of waiting to click the ‘leave meeting’ button. Some include Gather.town, Kumospace, and Pluto; some incorporating spacial dynamics where users can move around a virtual map to interact, and others focused on corporate and academic conferences. Since we do not see virtual gatherings disappearing any time soon, now might be the time to explore options other than Zoom, especially depending on the scenario and mood you are trying to create among a group. If you find yourself clicking ‘Forgot Password’ all too often, you’re not alone. Password managers can be life-changing and security-enhancing. A popular manager, LastPass, recently implemented new restrictions on their free tier only allowing to view their passwords from one type of device, either mobile or computer, starting this month.
We found a curated round-up of the best free and paid alternatives to LastPass.
1. Bitwarden, free or $10/year for Premium – Bitwarden promises the most password security, for free, across any number of devices. If you don’t have access to your devices but need your passwords, there is a featured web vault that you can access with any web-enabled device. Some of the paid features include encrypted file storage and two-factor authentication.
2. Dashlane, $59.99-$119.99/year – Dashlane’s price tag might be higher than LastPass’s but in addition to all the features other password managers likely include, Dashlane includes VPN protection.
3. WWPass Passhub, free or $4/year for Premium – WWPass Passhub is a secure cloud-based web app relying on an Android or iOS device to act as a passkey. The passkey is a QR code living on an app, replacing the usual master password and offering great security.
4. Myki Password Manager & Authenticator, free – Myki uses a app-to-browser extension pairing system; you’ll input a six-digit PIN or fingerprint to access your passwords, using your primary smartphone device as the main passkey.
5. Keeper, $34.99/year – Keeper promises many features at an affordable price, including a seamless experience with unlimited devices, two-factor authentication, automatic password capture, and more.
