Vanity URLs

Attackers are using customizable URLs, known as vanity URLs, on SaaS services to craft more convincing phishing links.

The technique has been used for links created through Box, Zoom, and Google Docs and Forms – all familiar services many people know and likely use. Vanity URLs provide custom and easy-to-remember links, and some applications do not validate the legitimacy of the URL’s subdomain and instead only the URI. Therefore, threat actors are able to use their own accounts to generate links to malicious content that appear to be hosted legitimately by your company’s account. In addition to phishing campaigns, the spoofed URLs can also be used for social engineering attacks, reputation attacks, and malware distribution.

Users should be wary of clicking on third-party links, even if the URL has the name of their organization in it. There are various red flags of rogue URLs to be aware of including look-a-alike domains, URL domain name encoding, shortened URLs, domain mismatches, strange originating domains, overly long URLs, file attachments that are images or links, and open redirectors.

WWDC 2022

Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) event took place this month from June 6-10 and was jam-packed with announcements. From the latest version of Apple’s flagship iPhone operating system to its latest chip plus new hardware and features, we’re re-capping the highlights to know about.

iOS 16 is focused on customization including an updated lock screen with selectable fonts and colors, widgets, and rotating photos. Notifications will roll in from the bottom of the screen and Live Activities, like music playback, can expand to fill the lock screen. Messages will allow editing, undoing sends, and marking messages unread. There will also be updates made to SharePlay, Dictation, and LiveText, as well as Wallet and Apple News. On the privacy front, a new feature is being introduced called Safety Check which will allow you to quickly revoke access to anyone who is threatening you. The iPad will also receive the same iOS 16 updates, plus a new Weather app. There will also be tweaks to the interface and capabilities to give the device a more desktoplike power.

Apple has also redesigned the MacBook Air with the M2 chip in mind. The laptop is thin and light, available in new colors, and has been upgraded to a 13.6-inch Liquid Retina display. The Air is delivering the same battery life but with better performance. Though it did not receive a redesign, the 13-inch MacBook Pro does also get the M2 chip, with better performance and an active cooling system.

With WatchOS 9, new watch faces are on the way, with more diverse calendars and the ability to pin apps at the top of the dock. There will also be new banner notifications, support for Podcasts for kids, as well as more detailed metrics for working out. A new multisport workout will allow you the ability to switch between running, swimming, cycling in order to track data by workout appropriately. With exercise comes the need for recovery, and Sleep Stages will use the accelerometer and heart-rate sensor to track what sleep states you’re in and time them.
