An Amazon Ring security camera living in an 8 year old girl’s bedroom was hacked by a man claiming to be Santa Claus.
The family lives in Tennessee and mother Ashley LeMay says she recently bought the Ring security camera on Black Friday, but now plans to get rid of it as it proved anything but secure. A hacker accessed the camera in Ashley’s daughter’s room first by playing a song popular in horror movies, then to speak to her claiming he was Santa and that she could do whatever she wanted in her room. The camera features HD video, night vision, and a two-way talk feature most likely enabling the hacker to not only talk to the young girl, but also to see her.
There have not been any known updates if anybody has been charged with the incident yet. A Ring spokesperson says the incident was isolated and not due to a security breach. With customer trust being important to the company, they are investigating the issue and taking steps to protect their devices against hacks in the future. The spokesperson also encourages users to often update their passwords, as well as enable two-factor authentication to provide a second layer of security against hackers.
