From large companies to individual accounts, there has not been a shortage of cybersecurity issues in recent news. Phishing emails are common among these types of attacks, so this month we want to give you our tips and tricks to avoid being scammed.
First, you should always expect the unexpected; phishing emails come in a variety of forms, so it is important to ask yourself if you were expecting anything like an HR document, shipping confirmation, or a password reset from your IT department. As important as identifying if you are expecting anything, is identifying who you might be expecting it from. This means double checking the sender of the email, and reporting immediately if they’ve asked for your login credentials. The next thing to be cautious about is links or URL’s that are unrecognizable; while a link may look legitimate, you can hover over it without clicking on it to see if it changes at all. Along with suspicious links comes spelling and grammatical errors. This might be less noticeable at first glance, but can be a sign that you are dealing with a phishing email, and would be worth a second glance. Lastly, phishing scams on are a timeline; if there is a sense of urgency to the email, it is likely trying to get users to act fast without second thoughts. This could be seen in phrases like “urgent action required” or “your account has been compromised”.
