Another day, another malware attack. A security researcher discovered Mac malware that allows the attacker to activate the webcam to take photos and screenshots, and capture keystrokes.
The malware was discovered in January and is a variant on Fruitfly. Fruitfly used antiquated code predating OS X, originally used in attacks against biomedical research institutions. Though only recently discovered, Synack researcher Patrick Wardle says the malware has been infecting Macs for at least five years and possibly longer. The malware was blocked shortly after discovery by a macOS update, and sources say only older and out of date Macs were affected. While the malware doesn’t appear to be targeting companies, or designed to make money, it was still a threat, as any malware would be.
