IBM announced this week the definitive agreement to acquire most assets of the Weather Company. Though IBM would not confirm the amount they plan to pay for the company, The Wall Street Journal has estimated the deal at around $2 billion. Aside from The Weather Channel, the deal will allow IBM to acquire weather.com, various weather data collection points, consumer and business applications, and over 900 staff people. IBM will use Watson, their artificial intelligence business, to parse the Weather Company’s data to make it even more valuable across a range of industries.
