There has not been a shortage of phishing attacks recently, against companies from different industries around the world. The latest scam of the week targets New York drivers; drivers are receiving emails stating they must pay a fine or have their drivers license revoked.
The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles has warned motorists that the email scam is simply bait, to entice users to click a payment link that will then infect their workstation with malware. It is unclear at this time how many people have been affected, though calls to the DMV were received from the Albany, Syracuse, and New York City areas. This scam is similar to one that hit NYS about 18 months ago. Previous attacks have usually wrapped up within 24-48 hours, so while the NYS DMV doesn’t think NY motorists are in any further danger, they warn that the people behind the scam might be moving on to other states and their drivers.
